What is WALANT?
– an acronym for ‘Wide Awake Local Anaesthesia No Tourniquet’ surgery
it refers to all procedures using local anaesthetic injections with adrenaline to numb the area, without the need for any other pain control. Patients normally listen to their headphones or wear VR sets, whilst surgery is performed, and can move their fingers or wrists at the surgeons request, in order to test the adequacy of the particular procedure. Patients report high satisfaction scores. This type of surgery can be applied to virtually all of hand surgery.
Patient Reviews
I first met Mr Patrick Goon in the Plastics department of Lister Hospital. I found the consultation was the first step of what I consider to be exceptional care. In October 2022 Mr Goon operated on my R Index finger pip joint for osteoarthritis. I cannot praise Mr Goon and all his team enough. From the moment of admission to discharge I received a high standard of care. Every action undertaken was explained fully, my questions were answered with expertise.
The surgery was undertaken with a nerve block which meant I was fully awake. I was made to feel at ease, I chose some music to listen to, but I was also included in some conversation between Mr Goon and his registrar. I could hear the dialogue between them, discussing the procedure with Mr Goon having the time and patience to instruct / teach which is an important part of learning for junior doctors. It was a positive experience of which I thank Mr Goon for. Subsequent care at the physiotherapist hand clinic completed the whole experience. The surgery was highly successful and I am so pleased that my finger is now straight, functional with 75 degree bend, pain free, something which I hadn’t experienced for a long time prior to the surgery. I am so grateful to the skill of Mr Patrick Goon.
I have had excellent care from Mr Goon and his team regarding my hand condition. I was recommended to see Mr Goon by a relative of mine. I have had timely appointments and had consultations with Mr Goon and the hand therapists. My condition has improved significantly. So I am very pleased with the result.
Wonderful care pre op and post op by Mr Goon and his support staff. Appointment times quick with no wait. Care and recovery was priority throughout.
