Dupuytren’s Disease

a common condition seen in the UK, with hard fibrous ‘cords’ forming underneath the skin of the palm and fingers, eventually resulting in the fingers curling and bending into the palm, unable to straighten, namely termed flexion contractures.

Treatment

Hard fibrous ‘cords’ forming underneath the skin of the palm and fingers, eventually resulting in the fingers curling and bending into the palm, unable to straighten, namely termed flexion contractures.

Treatment mainly consists of surgical release of the contractures, taking great care to avoid injury to the little digital vessels and nerves in the fingers.

The release is through excising the abnormal fibrous tissue or fasciectomy. Occasionally, in severe or recurrent disease, some skin is also excised (a dermofasciectomy) and a skin graft is used to reconstruct the area. This adds to the complexity of the procedure but does have the benefit of having the lowest incidence of developing recurrent disease amongst all the treatments.

Patient Reviews

I was referred to Mr Goon, because I had Dupuytrens Contracture of both my little fingers. My hands were operated on separately, using anaesthetic blocks, and in both cases, after six months targeted and caring physio, I can use both hands normally again.

Putting on gloves is no problem, I can play the piano again, and now also can play three sizes of recorder. It has enabled me to indulge my love of music to the full. Mr Goon’s skill and care have changed my life.

For a number of years I have suffered from Dupuytren’s contracture of the little finger of my right hand.

Mr Goon reviewed my condition and decided that a dermofasciectomy was required. By this time the finger was so severely bent that I was concerned that it would not be possible to correct the contracture. I need not have worried.

Nobody in everyday circumstances would notice that the finger had been operated on. This was fantastic treatment from Mr Goon and his team and I am deeply grateful to them for this outstanding work
