Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

a common condition where a major nerve to the hand, the ‘median nerve’ is compressed at the wrist level in most cases. This can manifest as pain in the hand and fingers, and sometimes the forearm.

Symptoms & diagnosis

This can manifest as pain in the hand and fingers, and sometimes the forearm.

There is usually  the feeling of ‘pins and needles’ in the fingers, with numbness. Stiffness and weakness in grip can also be present. Symptoms and signs can vary from mild to the very severe. The diagnosis can be made from the clinical presentation, from nerve conduction studies and from scans for example, ultrasound. Treatment is tailored to each case depending on severity, and will either be conservative including local steroid injections, or a surgical release of the nerve, which can be open or by a minimal access ultrasound-guided technique.

Peripheral nerve compression neuropathy & chronic nerve pain

Apart from carpal tunnel syndrome, there exists other compression neuropathies for example lacertus syndrome, pronator syndrome and radial tunnel syndrome in the upper forearm, and cubital tunnel syndrome at the elbow. These can all be surgically decompressed with good effect. Chronic nerve pain due to injuries can be treated with different surgical techniques depending on each case.

Patient Reviews

I recently had the privilege of being under the care of Mr. Patrick Goon, a consultant plastic surgeon, for my carpal tunnel syndrome, and the experience was nothing short of excellent.

From the initial consultation to the post-operative follow-ups, Mr. Goon demonstrated a level of expertise, compassion, and professionalism that truly sets him apart in the field. First and foremost, Mr. Goon made sure to thoroughly explain the entire surgical process, patiently addressing all my concerns and questions.

His ability to convey complex medical information in an accessible manner not only eased my apprehensions but also instilled a sense of trust in his capabilities. On the day of the surgery, I was greeted by a warm and supportive team at the clinic, reflecting Mr. Goon’s commitment to creating a comfortable and reassuring environment for his patients. The procedure itself was executed with precision and efficiency. What truly distinguishes Mr. Goon is his genuine concern for his patients’ well-being. Throughout the recovery process, he remained accessible, ensuring that I had a smooth and quick recovery.

Not only did Mr. Goon alleviate my right-hand carpal tunnel symptoms successfully, but interestingly, the symptoms that I was experiencing in my left hand also improved. This was predicted by Mr. Goon. Mr. Goon is a kind and empathetic gentleman with a calm and reassuring manner. His genuine care for his patients is evident in every interaction, creating a sense of trust and comfort that is invaluable in the medical field. His skill, compassion, and dedication to patient care are unparalleled.

From the minute I had my consultation with Mr Patrick Goon, I knew I was in safe hands.

I had suffered from severe carpal tunnel pain from July 2023, and the pain was unbearably bad. I saw Mr Goon in early November, and he talked me through exactly what was going on in my hand. He also explained what the operation would entail. I had a nerve conduction study to confirm the carpal tunnel in my wrist, and was then booked in for an operation at the end of November.

Mr Goon is a very kind and caring individual, who never once made me feel unsure about the operation. He never stopped explaining what was happening, and 5 weeks on after the operation, I’m not even going to have a scar! Mr Goon was reassuring throughout my experience, as well as very personable.

I thoroughly recommend Mr Goon, and I would not hesitate if I needed anything else operation wise. Touchwood I wont!

I was diagnosed in 2019 with carpal tunnel in both hands, my symptoms were pins and needles, mainly at night, which meant a lot of lost sleep and a lot of pain.

Mr Goon recommended steroid injections, which worked for about a year then surgery in Jan 2023. I can’t thank Mr Goon and all his team for all there hard work and the care I received.
